Stand & Deliver: Modern Highway Robbery! Your Money or No Home!

Typical example of today’s rip off Letting Agents, my family and I have also fallen foul of this horrid situation many times…

Last week, I looked at a ‘Beautifully presented, newly refurbished, modernised home’. It lived up to the blurb in a way not many things ever do. It was indeed beautiful. It was well presented, and newly refurbished. Its brand new kitchen and bathroom, oak laminate, and white-painted smooth unmarked walls set pictures of Home Beautiful and Good Housekeeping magazine floating peacefully through my head, as cellos played and gauzy white nets fluttered in a gentle breeze. I could see modern sleek furniture in the ‘spacious’ living room. The front room, with its closed off fireplace, was already my new study. In my private little dream, I saw the beds placed just so, in each of the three double (mould-free) bedrooms. It was, in short, a dream home. And the rent, at £875 a month, was average and just within budget.

The agency fees, however, were not. As anyone in the…

Lets all Blame the Immigrants!

Whilst out dog walking today I was practicing what I preach and talking to fellow dog walkers about their political views. Now I am an advocate for free speech and would never want anyone to think otherwise, however I am getting really tired of hearing people blame Immigration for the state of affairs in our great country.

Wake Up People! – You’ve Been Fed Lies…

Yes! You really have…

In an effort to divert your attention away from the REAL ISSUES, and the establishment parties are bloody good at it so I don’t blame anyone for believing it. When you start delving into the facts even just a little bit you will question these beliefs I guarantee it…

What about all the immigrants claiming benefits?

FACT: We pay over £11bn a year in benefits to people who are IN WORK, so what this actually means is we are subsidising big businesses who employ their workforce on minimum wage and zero hour contracts and who are exploiting their workers. Immigrants are actually only responsible for a small percentage of this figure, in fact even in percentage terms less working immigrants claim benefits compared to non-migrant workers.

Only a very tiny percentage of immigrants claim out of work benefits and it is also quite hard for them to do so, if from outside the EU for example then they have to have lived here and paid taxes for 5 years! But guess what as soon as someone finds one that does there is a mass media showcase leaving you feeling exploited and xenophobic.

Migrant workers do not come here for the benefits, they come here because we have a strong economy and a rich diverse labour market.

I cant get treatment because the NHS is swamped with immigrants!

FACT: During the last parliament £80bn worth of cuts have been made to (amongst other things) the NHS, Police and Fire Services. In the very same period of time the chief bankers in this country have paid themselves bonuses cumulatively worth £80bn. These people are the very same people who WE have bailed out time and again, and as of 2009 it was estimated that government support for Britain’s banks had reached a staggering £850bn! Is it any wonder we hit a recession and have a massive deficit?

I had the misfortune to be in A&E with my grandmother just the other day, the Doctor and Nurse caring for her were from Zimbabwe, the nicest most caring professionals you could ever wish to meet. I think it would be fair to say that the NHS would struggle to function in any capacity if it were not for migrant workers, we should appreciate them for what they do, not hate them because of where they came from.

I could keep going on and on about this, but I wont because I actually have stuff I need to do today! But if you fancy some further reading on the subject, try Steve Wilkins article The Immigration Con and failing that don’t just take our word for it, go look for yourself and you will be surprised what you find.

The Truth is Out There…

Miss P & Me, you make me complete :)

Happy Anniversary!

I’m taking a day off today to celebrate our fifth anniversary with my lovely girlfriend Rosie!

We’ll be visiting sunny Brentwood in a short while, and while that in itself may not sound too auspicious there are underlying romantic reasons we go, every year we recreate as closely as possible our first date where we celebrate finding the missing pieces to our jigsaw of life.

We start with a lovely meal in “our” Tarantino’s Italian restaurant, followed by a leisurely stroll around the country park. So far we have been very lucky with the weather and today looks like no exception 🙂

So ta ta for now, back to TUSC Campaigning tomorrow!

Heaven or Hell Sign

Heaven or Hell?

Just a bit of Monday morning fun 🙂

While walking down the street one day a Member of Parliament is tragically hit by a truck and dies. His soul arrives in heaven and is met by St. Peter at the entrance. “Welcome to Heaven,” says St. Peter.

“Before you settle in, it seems there is a problem. We seldom see a high official around these parts, you see, so we’re not sure what to do with you.”

“No problem, just let me in,” says the man.

“Well, I’d like to, but I have orders from higher up. What we’ll do is have you spend one day in hell and one in heaven. Then you can choose where to spend eternity.”

“Really, I’ve made up my mind. I want to be in Heaven,” says the MP.

“I’m sorry, but we have our rules.” And with that, St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he went down, down, down to hell. The doors open and he found himself in the middle of a green golf course. In the distance is a clubhouse and standing in front of it are all his friends and other politicians who had worked with him.

Everyone is very happy and dressed in evening dress. They run to greet him, shake his hand, and reminisce about the good times they had while getting rich at the expense of the people.

They played a friendly game of golf and then dined on lobster, caviar and champagne.

Also present is the devil, who really is a very friendly & nice guy who has a good time dancing and telling jokes. They are having such a good time that before he realizes it, it’s time to go.

Everyone gives him a hearty farewell and wave whilst the elevator rises….

The elevator rises and the door opens in heaven where St. Peter is waiting for him. “Now it’s time to visit Heaven.”

So, 24 hours pass with the MP joining a group of contented souls moving from cloud to cloud, playing the harp and singing. They have a good time and, before he realizes it, the 24 hours have gone by and St. Peter returns.

“Well, then, you’ve spent a day in hell and another in Heaven. Now choose your eternity.”

The MP reflects for a minute, then he answers: “Well, I would never have said it before, I mean heaven has been delightful, but I think I would be better off in hell.”

So St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down and so on down to hell.

When the doors open he’s in the middle of a barren land covered with waste and garbage.

He sees all his friends, dressed in rags, picking up the trash and putting it in black bags as more trash falls from above.

The devil comes over to him and puts his arm around his shoulder. “I don’t understand,” stammers the MP.

“Yesterday I was here and there was a golf course and clubhouse, and we ate lobster and caviar, drank champagne, danced and had a great time. Now there’s just a wasteland full of garbage and my friends look miserable. What happened?”

The devil looks at him, smiles and says, “Yesterday we were campaigning…”

Oxfam 80 Richest People

The Emperor’s New Clothes

Last night we leafleted for Medway TUSC outside the local cinemas after the Russel Brand film, if you don’t know what it is all about I’ve copied the synopsis at the bottom of this post and embedded the trailer so you can check it out.

We met quite a few voters that were really upset about the current state of affairs in our country but really don’t know what to do about it, in my view the first thing you need to do is talk about it with your friends, family and social media, make your feelings known. The more of us that say something the louder our voice will be, don’t be afraid to “talk politics” we’ve all been downtrodden to such an extent that doing so has almost become taboo!

Lastly and perhaps most importantly, look for alternative parties on your ballot paper like TUSC (Trade Union and Socialist Coalition) protest against the establishment parties, make yourself heard and remember it is only a wasted vote if you DONT vote!

Things Can Change – we just need to make t happen collectively…

If you missed it on Tuesday, dont worry because it’s showing again in selected cinemas and available on demand from Friday 24th April.

Definition: Fairytale, allegorical

1. Collective ignorance of an obvious fact, or deception, despite undeniable evidence.

World-famous British comedian and activist Russell Brand joins forces with acclaimed director Michael Winterbottom on a polemical documentary about the financial crisis and gross inequality we currently face. Starting with the genesis of today’s economic policies, with the arrival of Milton Friedman’s school of thought in Reagan’s leadership and Thatcher’s UK, the film explores how these policies have come to dominate the western world. The rich have got richer; where a CEO of a major British company used to earn 10 times the average wage of his workers, now they earn 200 times. According to Oxfam, the richest 80 people in the world own as much as the poorest 3.5 billion. It would now take 300 years for the average cleaner, cleaning the offices of his senior boss, to earn the same salary taken home by the same boss last year.

Milton Friedman once said that every crisis was an opportunity. The financial crisis of 2008 should have been a chance to reform the system for the benefit of everyone. But instead, austerity for everyone throughout Britain and Europe was the price to be paid for supporting the financial sector, with £131 billion spent by UK tax payers to keep the financial system afloat, while $30 trillion in support and subsidies went to Wall Street in the US.

Using a mixture of documentary, interviews, archive footage and comedy, Russell Brand takes us from his hometown Grays in Essex, to the heart of London ‘City’ and on to the Big Apple. This daring film will shake up the world by revealing the bewildering truth about how the people at the bottom are paying for the luxuries of those at the top.

Kelly Tolhurst and Eric Pickles in Rochester and Strood

Leafleting for TUSC in Strood

Today Steve Wilkins (Medway TUSC Council Candidate for Hempstead and Wigmore) and myself were out leafleting in Strood market again, and imagine my surprise when walking through the market I bumped into Eric Pickles!

Not literally of course, however he was rather hard to miss 🙂

Eric Pickles Ate My Youth Club

I recognised him but couldn’t remember his name at first but I knew he was a Tory minister, you could tell because he had a massive entourage and 2 or 3 photographers taking pictures of him looking very stately, staring slightly upward at the sky, you know “that” look.

A short while later the procession of Tory campaigners came wandering past Steve and I which made me laugh because Steve started shouting “No More Cuts… Save the NHS… Stop Privatisation… No More Austerity…” etc. etc. I even heard Eric say “Oh How Lovely” then a couple of the Tory campaigners came past with Kelly Tolhurst and offered me a leaflet “It’s ok” I said “I’ve already read it and binned it, but you can have one of mine if you like

I wonder if they decided to pop down because TUSC have been campaigning in Strood Market for weeks? Maybe it was just a coincidence, but I think maybe we are starting to scare them, and Kelly Tolhurst’s answer to a couple of Socialists giving out leaflets and talking to people was a “Shock and Awe” visit from Mr Pickles 🙂

Made me giggle anyway…

Abbey Court Strood Chemical Spill

Chemical Spill at Abbey Court School in Strood

The emergency services were called out to Abbey Court Special School in Strood after a chemical spill in the plant room of the building, fortunately only a skeleton staff were in the school at the time due to the Easter holidays and crews worked with them to quickly isolate the incident.

One 48-year-old Man was suffering from breathing difficulties and was treated at the scene before being taken to Medway Maritime Hospital.

Consider the huge amount of public sector workers involved in saving this mans life, from the school staff through the 999 operators to the emergency services and the hospital staff, this level of public safety does not come cheap and nor should it.

What an amazing job they do especially under the consistent cuts they have been subjected to in recent years, I can only put it down to thier sheer grit and determination to help people that they can still perform as well as they do.

Two ambulance cars, an ambulance and a Hazardous Area Response Team were dispatched along with Four fire engines and specialist equipment, with the first crew arriving within eight minutes of receiving the 999 call from the school.

A friend raised an interesting point in that under normal circumstances you would think this response time was pretty good right? Well, now consider that there is a Fire Station directly opposite this school, 8 minutes actually does not look that great after all!

But who would you blame, the Fire Service for being a bit slack?

Not Me! I blame the fact that 5000 Firefighters have been cut from the service in the past 5 years. They are overstretched, undermanned and have generally been pretty poorly treated on pay and pensions by OUR government… Are you going to stand for 5 more years of this? NOT ME!

Historic Moment

History was made this evening with the very first Party Political Broadcast on behalf of TUSC.
Plain speaking, no clever marketing just working class people standing and being counted.

It was aired by the three main channels at three separate times and laid the blame for the current economic problems that working class people are experiencing, firmly where it belongs. At the door of the political elite, International Casino Banks and corporations who gambled with our money on dodgy debt packages. Then when it all went wrong expected us to give them even more money to help them maintain their lifestyle.

Watch and you will find out there is an alternative, a different way to tackle the gross inequality and poverty without wrecking all our public services and driving even more people further into poverty.

Use your vote to protest against the establishment politicians…

Happy Birthday Andy

Happy Birthday to Me!

Just a very quick post today to say how humbled I am from all the birthday wishes, cards and presents from Family, Friends and Colleagues, Thank You!

Even Google got in on it 🙂

And a very special thank you to my lovely Miss P for pampering me, and for letting me touch the TV remote even if it was only for one day, Love You.
